Overall Scope:
We were awarded the contract for the complete building refurbishment of the mortuary a hospital in the South West. Due to the nature of the work environment, it was important that our team was considerate of the fact that they were working around grieving family and friends and made any necessary alterations to respect and accommodate their needs. The body store remained operational during the construction phase in order to help facilitate this.
Building refurbishment work on the mortuary was broken up into and carried out in two stages to ensure some services could remain operational in separated zones. Stage 1 involved the removal of the existing hygienic wall cladding, which was then replaced with a seam welded system and installation of the new IPS panels. Following that, Stage 2 saw the demolition of the existing internal partition walls and the MF ceilings, alterations to the internal layout and replacement of both items with new finishes suitable for use. Additionally, a new drainage system was needed to alter the position of the existing tables which required specialist disc cutting and excavation of four channels in the existing floor followed by the installation of a new Seamless Terrazzo floor.
As is standard in our commercial building refurbishment projects, the health and safety of our teams and members of the public in the area was our foremost concern and one of our SMSTS qualified foreman was present to manage this at all times. The foreman’s role was to ensure that health and safety procedures were being followed, keep the project on schedule, and make certain that the function of the mortuary was maintained. On-site inductions, daily safety audits, and all relevant information including welfare and fire escape procedures were given out. Toolbox talks were held at regular intervals during the building refurbishment project to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the team, as well as nearby members of the public was maintained throughout.
